Sept. 15 - 2010 All About Herb - Avocado Oil

Avocado Oil Skincare
By Mariah Young

Dry skin could be discomforting. Many people solve the problem through using moisturizers. There are now specific skincare products that are appropriate for specific levels of skin dryness. The best ones are those containing natural ingredients like avocado oil.
Avocado oil has effective hydrating properties, similar to our skin's own natural oil. It has been scientifically proven as an effective stimulant of collagen production. It increases proportion of collagen in the skin's dermis. Thus, avocado oil helps make the skin eliminate dryness and at the same time look younger and smoother.
Oil from avocado is rich and deeply penetrating. These properties have made avocado oil a valuable component of different traditional skincare regimens due to its moisturizing and skin healing properties. Aside from that, the fruit is abundant in vitamin A, vitamin D, vitamin E, beta carotene, lecithin, potassium, and several other essential proteins. Eat the fruit and see how its nutrient could help bring about a healthier and more vibrant skin.
Avocado oil as an anti-aging agent has high levels of sterolins that effectively reduce age spots. Sterolins are plant steroids found in avocado oil that help make the skin softer and more moisturized. For quite some time, avocado oil has been used as a treatment for skin drying and itching, making it an ideal remedy against skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
The oil could be combined with other natural ingredients for boosted effectiveness. One of those is Shea Butter. It is an emollient and natural skin moisturizer. It could soften the skin and soothe inflammation. When applied to the skin regularly, the ingredient could help reduce blemishes, scars, and brown spots. It could also smooth out stretch marks and wrinkles. Like avocado, shea butter has vitamins A and E as well as numerous essential fatty acids. These make the substance ideal as a moisturizing ingredient and a component of topical skincare products for dry skin.
It has also been found that the moisturizing effect of shea butter is identical to the moisturizing feature of good natural oil produced by the skin's sebaceous glands. What makes shea butter an ideal active ingredient in anti-aging skincare products is its ability to be absorbed rapidly by the skin. Thus, you would not be discomforted by a usual greasy feeling that other anti-aging products bring about.
Avocado oil combined with shea butter and several other natural ingredients could make up a winning skincare formula. If you want to achieve a softer, younger-looking, and healthier skin that is always appropriately moisturized, make avocado oil a requirement when you search for skincare products to buy and use. For sure, you would not resent entrusting your skin to this wonderful nutrient.

How to Stop the Latest Threat to Your Health - MRSA-MDR

Can garlic stop Godzilla?

Godzilla, as you know is this monster. An unstoppable monster that rips up whole cities. Bombs, bullets and even missiles just bounce off his back like raindrops.

So what if you ran into a real-life Godzilla?

A Godzilla called MRSA

MRSA stands for Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, which is a dangerous bacteria that has exploded from 127,000 cases in 1999 to 278,000 in 2005. According to the CDC, this deadly threat was responsible for more deaths in the US than AIDS in 2005. Spreading across the world, MRSA is now found in 38 states, Canada, and 9 European Union Countries.

So will garlic help?

MRSA mutates quickly

A new variant of MRSA called MDR has been recently identified in the Jan 15th 2008 physicians journal called the Annals of Internal Medicine. Standing for multidrug resistant, MDR is the newest MRSA-zilla monster to be unleashed. Cases of this newest monster have been found in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Boston.

This strain has also shown the ability to resist almost every antibiotic. Without antibiotics, there are not many drugs that will protect you.MRSA-zilla on a rampage

MDR is a highly virulent strain is reported to produce rapidly spreading skin infections where hours can make a difference. It can also penetrate deeper into your bloodstream, bones, and joints. The lungs and heart are also at risk.

When doctors try ineffective antibiotics first, it is like trying to stop Godzilla with a squirt gun. This delay can mean the difference between life and death.

Who is most at risk?

People who are at the greatest risk are athletes, children, military personnel, and people with weakened immune systems. Health care professionals, teachers, and sports trainers are also at risk when they come into contract with if from their patients, students, and clients.

MRSA is in your community

A Poolesville County high school student gets MRSA from infected football equipment. A Montgomery County Maryland school teacher in Maryland dies because of it. Paramedics and firefighters in Washington, DC have contracted it. A grand mother is transferred out of a Maryland hospital because doctors can't stop it.

There are multiple strains: a strain found in hospital patients especially from post-surgical infections called HA-MRSA and a community strain CA-MRSA. MDR is the newest variant of the CA-MRSA strain called USA-300.

You can't always see it coming

People who are perfectly healthy and do not show any symptoms have been found to be carriers of these strains of MRSA. According to the CDC, these bugs can be carried by a person for weeks or years without any signs or symptoms.

Doing all the right things may not be enough

You know all the right things to do to not get sick: wash your hands and cover up any open wounds until they heal. You also need to keep your immune system strong by eating well, getting enough rest, and exercising. However, MRSA infections are growing among people who have not been in a hospital in over a year.

You need more than medications

Most people like you feel scared when you realize that medications may not protect you from these quickly mutating MRSA-zilla monsters. When you are still sick after multiple courses of antibiotics, where can you find a more powerful defense against these mutant MRSA drug resistant strains?

Is garlic the answer?

Herbal defenses for your immune system

In a 2000 report on treating MRSA in a Japanese hospital, five patients had active MRSA even after receiving multiple courses of different antibiotics, including the more powerful intravenous ones.

Their doctors were also trained in Chinese herbal medicine. They gave these five patients daily doses of 5 grams of an herbal formula called Bu Zhong Yi Qi Tang which translates to ''Ginseng and Astragalus Combination.'' Antibiotic drugs were discontinued at this time.

MRSA disappears in less than 6 weeks

Within 16 to 39 days, all of these patients tested MRSA-negative. No side effects were reported as a result of receiving the herbs.

These herbs have antibacterial and antiviral properties

This herbal formula has been shown to produce an increase in the activity of your immune system killer cells. One of the key herbs in this formula, called Astragalus, is known for it's antibacterial and antiviral properties. Astragalus works in combination with the other seven herbs in the formula to stimulate your immune system while helping to protect you from dangerous infections.

Patients recovered from other symptoms related to MRSA

The five patients in this study recovered from a variety of different symptoms related to their MRSA infection. These include: fever, pneumonia, open wounds or sores that wouldn't heal, difficulty breathing, lung congestion, abnormal breathing sounds, and chest pains.

How herbs can help you against MRSA

If you have contracted MRSA, you can receive a customized formula with the dose of each herb tailored to address and heal your specific symptoms. If needed, additional herbs are often added to increase immune system activity, increase antibacterial and antiviral properties, or to strengthen specific organs that are weakened or affected.

Herbs can also be used as preventative medicine also

These herbs can also be taken as a preventative measure to strengthen your immune system. If you tend to get sick more often, then your immune system needs additional support.

Having strong defenses prevents you from being overrun

By knowing what you can do now to strengthen yourself against these MRSA-zilla mutants, you will have a much better chance of stopping it before it has a chance to go deeper into your body.

Garlic helps too

In addition to the Chinese herb Astragalus, Dr. Andrew Weil recommends taking several pieces of raw garlic which is the Chinese herb called da' suan. Whenever you are feeling the first signs of any infection, I recommend swallowing four to five toes of minced garlic with a glass of water during a meal.

Continue doing all the right things like washing your hands frequently, keep you cuts and scrapes covered until they heal, and avoid contact with people's bandages or wounds.

Strengthen yourself against MRSA-zilla

You would greatly benefit from strengthening your immune system with Chinese herbs if you tend to get sick easily, require multiple rounds of antibiotics to recover from an infection, or work with people who are at risk. If MRSA-zilla ever strikes, your immune system will have a much better chance of protecting you against this mutating monster.

The Place of All Natural Chinese Herbs in Cancer Treatment
By Dr. Donna Schwontkowski

Medical philosophy is vastly different than all natural herbal therapy. Medical doctors are aggressive in their attack on cancer and try to burn the cancer out, cut it out, or kill it with potent drugs. Herbal philosophy is based on the support of the body's natural defenses and working with the body until any illness is gone. Both philosophies have their triumphs and challenges. In many people's minds, the big question is where do all natural Chinese herbs fit into the grand scheme of cancer treatment?

Why Not Mix Both Philosophies?

Many alternative health practitioners and even medical physicians now have decided that both philosophies can be incorporated together and result in a more successful outcome for patients with cancer, especially those on chemotherapy treatment. In the last few decades, clinical research studies have proven that it is indeed possible to combine medical therapy with all natural Chinese herbs.

For example, synthetic IL-2 is often used as a treatment modality by the medical profession for patients with colorectal cancer, lymphoma, melanoma, and kidney cancer. The chemotherapy drug is extremely toxic and can cause serious side effects. The herb Astragalus was given to patients with colorectal cancer. When researchers and doctors combined their efforts and administered the all natural Chinese herb Astragalus to patients receiving synthetic IL-2, the white blood cells of patients became faster and more efficient. The drug's effectiveness was enhanced, proving that a chemotherapy natural solution mixture could work, that all natural Chinese herbs do indeed have a place in chemotherapy treatment.

Studies show that Astragalus helps in cancer cases by increasing killer cells. Astragalus also helps offset immune damage from numerous drugs. Astragalus protects the immune system, increases the metabolic rate and increases energy levels. All these functions can only aid a chemotherapy patient.

Researchers frequently comment on the use of Astragalus to alleviate the toxic side effects of chemotherapeutic drugs. In the peer-reviewed journal, Carcinogenesis, June of 2007, researchers M.M. Tin et al reported that Astragalus inhibited cell growth and promoted the death of cancer cells. They also found that Astragalus reduced the size of tumors without causing death and without causing a drop in body weight in studies on mice. The researchers concluded that Astragalus could be an effective chemotherapeutic agent in colon cancer treatment and used as an adjuvant in combination with other orthodox chemotherapeutic drugs to reduce the side effects of chemotherapy compounds.

In another study, patients with small cell lung cancer used traditional chemotherapeutic drugs like vincristine, cyclophosphamide and carmustine and researchers added the all natural Chinese herbs ginseng and Astragalus to the therapy. The survival rate increased to as long as 17 years in some of the patients! Again, this proved that a chemotherapy natural solution mixture of treatment could work.

Glycyrrhiza glabra, of licorice, is also another Chinese herb that activates immune cells in human subjects. The Journal of Phytotherapy Research reported on a study in August 2006 where immune cell function was enhanced within 24 hours of ingesting licorice and also Astragalus and Echinacea. CD4 and CD8 T cell counts increased and continued for at least seven days. When the all natural Chinese herbs licorice and Astragalus along with Echinacea were used together, another immune cell function was improved, that of CD69 expression.

There are plenty of other studies that show that all natural Chinese herbs can be used as a chemotherapy natural solution. What we are seeing is that using the chemotherapy drugs by themselves can almost assure one of toxic side effects to come, but using them with the all natural Chinese herbs, the chemotherapy treatment can be endured better and with a higher quality of life.

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV)
By Djehuty Ma'at-Ra

Recommended Reading
A Complete Book On Herbal Remedies.
A Directory Catalogue Of Herbal Remedies For Ailments A-z

I've been getting a lot of cases as of recent pertaining to this alleged virus and decided the time is right for me to address this pathology. Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a so-called virus that is the cause of common warts that manifest on certain parts of the body, specifically the hands and feet. HPV is alleged to be the cause of lesions of the mucous membranes of the oral, anal, and genital cavities.

According to Western medical research and statistics, more than 50 types of HPV have been identified. A few of these types of HPV are said to be associated with cancerous and precancerous conditions.

According to Western medicine, the alleged virus can be transmitted through sexual contact and is frequently found in women with cancer of the cervix.

Unfortunately, in Western medicine there is no cure for an HPV infection. However, the warts can be removed by cryosurgery, laser treatment or conventional surgery (which I hear are all quite painful procedures).

Well, thank God for alternative medicine and healing because under these approaches, there is healing for HPV just like with all other virus infections (including genital herpes) and diseases.

Remember, to heal from a thing you must have knowledge of the thing. First and foremost, what is a virus? ANSWER: It is nothing but poison. The word "virus" in Latin means "poison."

Virus conditions are poisonous or toxic blood conditions where critters (microorganisms, parasites and worms) manifest in certain parts of the body, usually the genital region. This is why most people with a Herpes or Human Papilloma Virus infection have outbreaks or manifestations on or in the genitals.

Genital diseases impel us to look at our root or base chakra (energy center located at the genitals) for an energy imbalance. You see, all disease is first energetic and then ultimately manifests physically.

Most people who contract a HPV infection usually have issues with survival, being grounded, being connected with the Earth, sexuality, etc. Because virus means "poison," an HPV infection or any other viral infection makes the statement that your lifestyle is "poisonous" or "toxic" and what's needed is a change for the better.

Warts usually denote a need for something to break out or to be released. In many cases this can be sexual guilt, fear about sex or sexual practices, repressed thoughts and emotions (usually sexual), etc. Make the connection. You have warts, genitalia, sexually transmitted disease, and first or root chakra (located at the genitals). Diseases in the genital region denote sexual imbalance on some level (mental, emotional, psychological, etc.). When you connect the pieces of the puzzle or make the connections, this is what you get: an energetic imbalance of the "root or base chakra" that attracted a toxic person into your life to give you a "sexually transmitted disease" which caused "warts" to manifest at or on the "genitalia." And why? It's to get your attention so that you can correct the imbalance at its core or foundation but also so that you can correct the problem wholistically or on all levels.

Wherever the wart(s) manifests on the body (skin), it's a sign to look there specifically. The body is a map, human geography. Because the wart(s) manifests on the skin, the largest eliminative channel of the body, the sign or message is that you need to cleanse the blood (which has evidently become too toxic in that particular person or individual) as the skin always manifests a condition of the blood. A person with HPV undoubtedly has toxic or "poisonous" blood

Healing For HPV

Like with all other so-called viral infections, the body must be cleansed and there must be an emphasis on cleansing the blood and major eliminative channels (kidneys, liver, lungs, and colon) which serve as filters for the blood.

Many women who have genital herpes or HPV tell me when they cleanse or detoxify, their viral outbreaks and the pain associated with them are exacerbated during cleansing or detoxifying. This is because the vagina, too is an eliminative channel and outbreaks are actually a good sign (of healing) because the Body Intelligence is using the warts and lesions to expel or eliminate waste from inside the body.

A lot of these women have admitted to me that they contracted their viral infection via sexual intercourse while they cheated on their mate or spouse or from a mate or spouse who cheated on them. Either way, somebody was doing something they should not have been doing in "private," and thus, the consequences or ramifications of this "private" or discreet act manifested in the private parts of the body - the genitalia. Said another way, things (acts) done in the dark usually manifest in dark spots or areas on the body. The genitalia are located in the "dark" area or region of the body. It's dark because it is greatly "covered" or "hidden" from sight.

Surely there is a thing called Body Language that speaks but we can't hear and/or we don't understand the language. I have become more effective in assisting people heal wholistically due to my learning, studying and understanding of Body Language. You see, Body Language is decoded or deciphered with the use of metaphysics which the Western medical world, unfortunately, does not acknowledge, use or embrace.

After cleansing the body's blood and major eliminative channels, the next thing one should do is go on a daily regimen consisting of powerful antiviral, nervine, and immune boosting or strengthening herbs.

Antiviral herbs include: Olive Leaf (Olea europaea), Passionflower (Passiflora incarnate), Tronodora (tecoma stans), Osha Root (Ligusticum porterii), Lomatium Root (Lomatium dissectum), Chaparral Leaf (Larrea tridentate), Echinacea Root (Echincea angustifolia), Goldenseal Root (Hydrastis canadensis), St. John's Wort (Hypericim perforatum), and Usnea Lichen (Usnea spp.)

Nervine herbs include: Kava Kava (Piper methysticum), Valerian Root (Valeriana officinalis), Passionflower, Jatamansi (Nardostachys jatamansi), Lavender Flower (Lavender vera), and Chamomile (Matricaria recutta).

Immune boosting herbs include: Echinacea, Goldenseal, Astragalus (Astragalus membranaceus), Ginseng (Panax quinquefolium), and Lomatium Root.

Drinking vegetable juice (that contains cilantro and parsley) daily or during outbreaks is very helpful.

Alkaline baths (1-2 boxes of sea salt added to bath water) is very healing and soothing. Add 3-5 drops of essential oils of Tea Tree, Manuka, Ravensare, and Lavender to the water for enhanced therapeutic relief.

Ozonated natural oil can be directly applied (massaged, rubbed in) to lesions or warts. Ozone (or oxygen) helps purify the blood. Oxygen/ozone is very anti-viral in natural.

Add more raw foods (organic fruits and vegetables, esp. green leafy vegetables) to the daily diet. Greatly cut back on or cut out meats, dairy products and refined grains in addition to other refined and processed so-called foods.

Supplement oxygen drops to your daily drinking water. Again, oxygen is very anti-viral.

And lastly, please forgive yourself for contracting HPV. Sexually transmitted diseases are always "contracted" because you have to agree to get them and keep them. It's a contract (agreement), folks. You're exchanging one form of pain for another form of pain. This is the consideration of the contract. One pain may be on the emotional level due to the hurt of an affair, cheating on someone or being cheated on by someone. The other pain is always physical. But you have to love yourself and forgive yourself of the act (regardless of what act caused your HPV). Love and forgiveness starts the healing process.

Our Guide To The Astragalus Root

Astragalus root, or astragalus membranaceous as it is commonly known in scientific circles, is an herbal supplement that can pack a punch for your health. An herbal remedy, astragalus comes from the pea family, and it's been used for literally thousands of years in places such as China for therapeutically healing.
One thing that astragalus root has been made famous for is its ability to boost the immune system. While this isn't what the Chinese used astragalus for, Western medicine has discovered that astragalus helps to stimulate the body by producing a substance known as interferon while boosting red blood cell formation. Interferon, an anti viral agent, helps the body when destroying viruses and other harmful microbes. For this reason, many scientists recommend the astragalus root for those who have a compromised immune system. People who frequently fall victim to colds and get respiratory infections are prime candidates for an astragalus root user. It is also helpful to people with more serious conditions such as cancer, since the body is weakened when trying to fight a disease.
Another benefit of astragalus is its ability to boost energy levels and vitality. Also, astragalus root has been linked to improving blood circulation. Astragalus is pretty well known as a 'safe' herb, with no known side effects. However, it is important to consult a physician before you take any kind of supplement, especially if you are already taking medications. Some medications can counteract with herbal remedies, and vice versa, so it's important to get your facts straight with a physician regarding your regimen. Also, if you are pregnant or nursing, it's not advisable to take astragalus as its effect on children have not been tested.
Now that you know more about astragalus root, you can better decide if it's for you or not.
The product we personally use called Total Balance - http://www.health-product-we-use.com is the best supplement we have come across. We have been using this supplement for over 3 years with excellent health results.

Herbs For Increasing Energy
By James Spears

A Directory Catalogue Of Herbal Remedies For Ailments A-z

There are many herbs that are useful for increasing energy, but when selecting which ones to use, one should be conscious of which herbs are most appropriate for one's given condition. In Integrative Medicine we recognize several patterns of disharmony that are responsible for low energy and fatigue. The first pattern is characterized by weakness in the digestive system, and typically occurs with numerous digestive symptoms. The second pattern of fatigue is associated with the lungs and may occur with asthma, shortness of breath, or other respiratory conditions. Another pattern is associated with insomnia and anxiety; while the last pattern we shall discuss is related to the adrenal glands, and is very common in cases of chronic fatigue.
In order to better understand each pattern of disharmony that contributes to low energy and fatigue, lets look in greater detail at each of these patterns.
Fatigue with Digestive Problems
In this pattern fatigue occurs with digestive symptoms, and there may be numerous digestive diseases that are present. For the sake of simplicity we shall examine the most basic pattern, which occurs when there is weakness in the body's ability to process and assimilate food.
The most common symptoms of this pattern include:
Low EnergyLoss of AppetiteBloating and Tiredness After MealsFrequent Diarrhea or Loose StoolsDifficulty with Bowel Movements
Herbs for this pattern of fatigue include Ginseng, White Atractylodis, Astragalus, Wild Yam, Poria, and Licorice.
Fatigue with Respiratory and/or Immune Symptoms
Another common pattern of fatigue can occur when the function of the lungs is compromised, this is because getting sufficient oxygen is important in maintaining high energy levels. The air we breathe plays a major role in ensuring that the body can extract energy from the food we eat. Therefore, when there is a problem with the respiratory system it can greatly affect our overall energy levels.
In addition this pattern frequently manifests with a weak or compromised immune system, and as a result people with this pattern will get sick frequently.
In patterns of fatigue that are connected to an imbalance in the respiratory system common symptoms are:
AsthmaShortness of BreathDifficulty BreathingSinus CongestionAllergiesRunny NoseFrequently Catching the ColdLow Immune Function
My favorite herbs to use for this pattern of fatigue include Ginseng, Astragalus, Cordyceps, and Reishi. Other herbs may also be used, but these need to be determined according to what secondary symptoms are present.
Fatigue with Insomnia
When one has a difficult time sleeping this will frequently result in fatigue throughout the day. Typically this pattern of fatigue with insomnia also occurs with other conditions that are related to one's state of mind. High stress life-styles and chronic worrying are also components of this pattern.
The main symptoms of this pattern are:
High Stress LevelsInsomniaExcessive WorryingAnxietyDizziness
To increase energy levels with this pattern requires a skillful blend of herbs that will increase the energy in the day, combat stress levels, and help to induce better sleep patterns at night. To increase energy I like to use Ginseng, White Atractylodis, and Red Jujube. To calm the mind Zizyphus, Reishi, and Valerian are good choices. In cases of a blood deficiency, which is common in these cases, I will add Dang Gui and Logan Fruit. To help promote sleep I like using Valerian, Hops, Passion Flower, Skullcap, and Lavender.
Fatigue with Adrenal Weakness
The final pattern of fatigue we will discuss is related to the adrenal glands and is very common in cases of chronic fatigue. This pattern typically results from those that have long histories of overworking and high stress life-styles. Chronic long-term consumption of coffee with a poor diet can also be contributing factors. There are also some people that will manifest this pattern as a result of genetic patterns that predispose them to low levels of hormones.
Symptoms of this pattern include:
Chronic Fatigue or fatigue that has lasted for longer than 6 monthsFeeling "Burned Out"Lack of Interest, Motivation, and DriveExtremely Low Levels of EnergyPremature AgingLow Sex DriveDecreased Physical Functioning
This pattern requires using many herbs in combination to account for all the physiological needs that are present. Herbs I often use include Ginseng, Rehmania, Wild Yam, Cornus, Eucommia Bark, Morinda, Licorice, and Cinnamon. Other herbs will often be added depending on the specifics of the pattern and symptoms that are present.
The four examples described above are the most common patterns of fatigue and low energy, but there are also other possibilities. In complex conditions a person may even have more than one pattern. To understand what pattern you have it is important to have a consultation with an experienced health care provider.
For more information about how herbs may be used to treat fatigue and increase energy, feel free to contact me.

Chinese Herbs for the Cold and Flu Season
By Farah Khan Platinum Quality Author

A Directory Catalogue Of Herbal Remedies For Ailments A-z

Chinese Medicine has many recommendations for staying healthy and well for all seasons. In the fall, when the weather is beginning to get chilly and the days get shorter, our lungs and our respiratory system become more vulnerable to illness. People with asthma may begin to have more frequent attacks. One is more likely to catch a cold or come down with the flu.

In Chinese Medicine, the lungs are ruled by the element of metal. The element of metal is related to the fall. In the fall, the metal element and therefore the lungs are compromised, particularly in people who are susceptible to respiratory conditions anyhow.

The Chinese believe that the Lungs (which in Chinese medicine include the entire respiratory and immune system, not just the anatomical organ of the lungs) control the opening and closing of pores on the skin. When the Lungs are weak, the pores on the skin remain open, making the body more vulnerable to external pathogens. These external pathogens are related to Wind, probably because the Chinese noticed a correlation between windy days and cold drafts with people's tendency to come down with colds, flus, allergies, and asthma. They also noticed that people begin to shiver more before they come down with certain conditions, and correlated this with Wind also.

They also believed that the neck and back were most vulnerable to attacks from Wind, probably because people often get stiff and achy in that area of the body before they come down with a cold or the flu. I have personally noticed that when I first start feeling as if I am coming down with a cold or the flu, I notice that I get sensitized to any slight breeze or draft in my environment. If at this point I start keeping my neck thoroughly covered with a scarf and keep the back of my body protected, I can usually avoid coming down with a cold or the flu. Even if you are skeptical about this theory, it would certainly do no harm to try this out for yourself.

Astragalus is often used to boost immunity and increase resistance to illness in order to prepare for fall. The Chinese believe that astragalus aids the Lungs by closing the pores of the body, preventing pathogens from gaining a foothold in the body. Modern research has also verified the immune enhancing effects of astragalus. Research has shown that it increases phagocytosis and increases white blood cell count. Chinese research has shown it to have a protective effect against the common cold when taken consistently for two to eight weeks. Astragalus is an herb that works best as a long-term preventive measure. It is best to take it as a tea through the cold and flu season to enhance immunity and prevent illness. There is an excellent formula called Jade Windscreen Formula, or Yu Ping Feng San, which includes astragalus, that can often be found in health food stores and Asian markets. It is useful to take throughout the season to boost the body's resistance to colds, the flu, allergies, and asthma.

When you already have a full blown early case of the cold or flu, the Chinese believe that since the pathogen is already within the confines of the body, the best thing to do is to open the pores and promote sweating in order to expel the pathogen out of the body. As a result, it is not good to take astragalus or Jade Windscreen Formula while you actually have a cold or the flu. The Chinese believe that an herb such as astragalus, which has a function of closing the pores and reducing sweating, could prolong a cold or flu if you take it while you are sick. In order to open the pores and promote sweating, it is best to take ginger or cinnamon tea, or the Chinese patent formula, Gan Mao Ling. Have hot soups, and take warm baths with three drops of eucalyptus, lemon, or tea tree essential oil. All of these things can help you to sweat your cold out. These remedies are useful when you are feeling stiff and achy, and have a stuffy or runny nose and watery eyes with clear phlegm.

Hopefully, by taking the preceding advice you will be able to prevent your cold from progressing or from occurring at all. If your cold does progress to the point of having headache, fever, sore throat, and cough with sticky yellow or green phlegm, a different strategy is necessary. All of these symptoms indicate an infection or an inflammatory response from the body. Mint tea with lemon and honey can be soothing for the cough and the sore throat. The patent formula, Yin Qiao San, which has Forsythia and Honeysuckle in it, can help with these symptoms. Yin Qiao San is also useful for allergy and hayfever symptoms with red itchy eyes and a scratchy throat. The patent formula, Gan Mao Ling, is still useful because it is thought to be anti-viral and anti-bacterial. Gargling with warm, salt water can help with a sore throat. Warm baths with 3 drops of eucalyptus, lemon, or tea tree oil are also still useful because these essential oils are also considered to be anti-viral and anti-bacterial. Of course, if symptoms get severe, it is important to see your doctor.
