Herbs For Increasing Energy

There are many herbs that are useful for increasing energy, but when selecting which ones to use, one should be conscious of which herbs are most appropriate for one's given condition. In Integrative Medicine we recognize several patterns of disharmony that are responsible for low energy and fatigue. The first pattern is characterized by weakness in the digestive system, and typically occurs with numerous digestive symptoms. The second pattern of fatigue is associated with the lungs and may occur with asthma, shortness of breath, or other respiratory conditions. Another pattern is associated with insomnia and anxiety; while the last pattern we shall discuss is related to the adrenal glands, and is very common in cases of chronic fatigue.
In order to better understand each pattern of disharmony that contributes to low energy and fatigue, lets look in greater detail at each of these patterns.
Fatigue with Digestive Problems
In this pattern fatigue occurs with digestive symptoms, and there may be numerous digestive diseases that are present. For the sake of simplicity we shall examine the most basic pattern, which occurs when there is weakness in the body's ability to process and assimilate food.
The most common symptoms of this pattern include:
Low EnergyLoss of AppetiteBloating and Tiredness After MealsFrequent Diarrhea or Loose StoolsDifficulty with Bowel Movements
Herbs for this pattern of fatigue include Ginseng, White Atractylodis, Astragalus, Wild Yam, Poria, and Licorice.
Fatigue with Respiratory and/or Immune Symptoms
Another common pattern of fatigue can occur when the function of the lungs is compromised, this is because getting sufficient oxygen is important in maintaining high energy levels. The air we breathe plays a major role in ensuring that the body can extract energy from the food we eat. Therefore, when there is a problem with the respiratory system it can greatly affect our overall energy levels.
In addition this pattern frequently manifests with a weak or compromised immune system, and as a result people with this pattern will get sick frequently.
In patterns of fatigue that are connected to an imbalance in the respiratory system common symptoms are:
AsthmaShortness of BreathDifficulty BreathingSinus CongestionAllergiesRunny NoseFrequently Catching the ColdLow Immune Function
My favorite herbs to use for this pattern of fatigue include Ginseng, Astragalus, Cordyceps, and Reishi. Other herbs may also be used, but these need to be determined according to what secondary symptoms are present.
Fatigue with Insomnia
When one has a difficult time sleeping this will frequently result in fatigue throughout the day. Typically this pattern of fatigue with insomnia also occurs with other conditions that are related to one's state of mind. High stress life-styles and chronic worrying are also components of this pattern.
The main symptoms of this pattern are:
High Stress LevelsInsomniaExcessive WorryingAnxietyDizziness
To increase energy levels with this pattern requires a skillful blend of herbs that will increase the energy in the day, combat stress levels, and help to induce better sleep patterns at night. To increase energy I like to use Ginseng, White Atractylodis, and Red Jujube. To calm the mind Zizyphus, Reishi, and Valerian are good choices. In cases of a blood deficiency, which is common in these cases, I will add Dang Gui and Logan Fruit. To help promote sleep I like using Valerian, Hops, Passion Flower, Skullcap, and Lavender.
Fatigue with Adrenal Weakness
The final pattern of fatigue we will discuss is related to the adrenal glands and is very common in cases of chronic fatigue. This pattern typically results from those that have long histories of overworking and high stress life-styles. Chronic long-term consumption of coffee with a poor diet can also be contributing factors. There are also some people that will manifest this pattern as a result of genetic patterns that predispose them to low levels of hormones.
Symptoms of this pattern include:
Chronic Fatigue or fatigue that has lasted for longer than 6 monthsFeeling "Burned Out"Lack of Interest, Motivation, and DriveExtremely Low Levels of EnergyPremature AgingLow Sex DriveDecreased Physical Functioning
This pattern requires using many herbs in combination to account for all the physiological needs that are present. Herbs I often use include Ginseng, Rehmania, Wild Yam, Cornus, Eucommia Bark, Morinda, Licorice, and Cinnamon. Other herbs will often be added depending on the specifics of the pattern and symptoms that are present.
The four examples described above are the most common patterns of fatigue and low energy, but there are also other possibilities. In complex conditions a person may even have more than one pattern. To understand what pattern you have it is important to have a consultation with an experienced health care provider.

Chinese Herbs for the Cold and Flu Season
By Farah Khan Platinum Quality Author

A Directory Catalogue Of Herbal Remedies For Ailments A-z

Chinese Medicine has many recommendations for staying healthy and well for all seasons. In the fall, when the weather is beginning to get chilly and the days get shorter, our lungs and our respiratory system become more vulnerable to illness. People with asthma may begin to have more frequent attacks. One is more likely to catch a cold or come down with the flu.

In Chinese Medicine, the lungs are ruled by the element of metal. The element of metal is related to the fall. In the fall, the metal element and therefore the lungs are compromised, particularly in people who are susceptible to respiratory conditions anyhow.

The Chinese believe that the Lungs (which in Chinese medicine include the entire respiratory and immune system, not just the anatomical organ of the lungs) control the opening and closing of pores on the skin. When the Lungs are weak, the pores on the skin remain open, making the body more vulnerable to external pathogens. These external pathogens are related to Wind, probably because the Chinese noticed a correlation between windy days and cold drafts with people's tendency to come down with colds, flus, allergies, and asthma. They also noticed that people begin to shiver more before they come down with certain conditions, and correlated this with Wind also.

They also believed that the neck and back were most vulnerable to attacks from Wind, probably because people often get stiff and achy in that area of the body before they come down with a cold or the flu. I have personally noticed that when I first start feeling as if I am coming down with a cold or the flu, I notice that I get sensitized to any slight breeze or draft in my environment. If at this point I start keeping my neck thoroughly covered with a scarf and keep the back of my body protected, I can usually avoid coming down with a cold or the flu. Even if you are skeptical about this theory, it would certainly do no harm to try this out for yourself.

Astragalus is often used to boost immunity and increase resistance to illness in order to prepare for fall. The Chinese believe that astragalus aids the Lungs by closing the pores of the body, preventing pathogens from gaining a foothold in the body. Modern research has also verified the immune enhancing effects of astragalus. Research has shown that it increases phagocytosis and increases white blood cell count. Chinese research has shown it to have a protective effect against the common cold when taken consistently for two to eight weeks. Astragalus is an herb that works best as a long-term preventive measure. It is best to take it as a tea through the cold and flu season to enhance immunity and prevent illness. There is an excellent formula called Jade Windscreen Formula, or Yu Ping Feng San, which includes astragalus, that can often be found in health food stores and Asian markets. It is useful to take throughout the season to boost the body's resistance to colds, the flu, allergies, and asthma.

When you already have a full blown early case of the cold or flu, the Chinese believe that since the pathogen is already within the confines of the body, the best thing to do is to open the pores and promote sweating in order to expel the pathogen out of the body. As a result, it is not good to take astragalus or Jade Windscreen Formula while you actually have a cold or the flu. The Chinese believe that an herb such as astragalus, which has a function of closing the pores and reducing sweating, could prolong a cold or flu if you take it while you are sick. In order to open the pores and promote sweating, it is best to take ginger or cinnamon tea, or the Chinese patent formula, Gan Mao Ling. Have hot soups, and take warm baths with three drops of eucalyptus, lemon, or tea tree essential oil. All of these things can help you to sweat your cold out. These remedies are useful when you are feeling stiff and achy, and have a stuffy or runny nose and watery eyes with clear phlegm.

Hopefully, by taking the preceding advice you will be able to prevent your cold from progressing or from occurring at all. If your cold does progress to the point of having headache, fever, sore throat, and cough with sticky yellow or green phlegm, a different strategy is necessary. All of these symptoms indicate an infection or an inflammatory response from the body. Mint tea with lemon and honey can be soothing for the cough and the sore throat. The patent formula, Yin Qiao San, which has Forsythia and Honeysuckle in it, can help with these symptoms. Yin Qiao San is also useful for allergy and hayfever symptoms with red itchy eyes and a scratchy throat. The patent formula, Gan Mao Ling, is still useful because it is thought to be anti-viral and anti-bacterial. Gargling with warm, salt water can help with a sore throat. Warm baths with 3 drops of eucalyptus, lemon, or tea tree oil are also still useful because these essential oils are also considered to be anti-viral and anti-bacterial. Of course, if symptoms get severe, it is important to see your doctor.

As you can see, the progression to a case of the common cold or the flu is a multi-stage process. The sooner you work on preventing the problem and strengthening your body's resistance the better. In the fall, when the days are getting shorter and chillier, it is important to boost the strength of your body and increase your resistance to illness throughout the season. Of course, if you do get a full blown case of cold or flu, there are still many gentle and safe traditional chinese remedies that can address your condition.

Our Guide To The Astragalus Root

Astragalus root, or astragalus membranaceous as it is commonly known in scientific circles, is an herbal supplement that can pack a punch for your health. An herbal remedy, astragalus comes from the pea family, and it's been used for literally thousands of years in places such as China for therapeutically healing.
One thing that astragalus root has been made famous for is its ability to boost the immune system. While this isn't what the Chinese used astragalus for, Western medicine has discovered that astragalus helps to stimulate the body by producing a substance known as interferon while boosting red blood cell formation. Interferon, an anti viral agent, helps the body when destroying viruses and other harmful microbes. For this reason, many scientists recommend the astragalus root for those who have a compromised immune system. People who frequently fall victim to colds and get respiratory infections are prime candidates for an astragalus root user. It is also helpful to people with more serious conditions such as cancer, since the body is weakened when trying to fight a disease.
Another benefit of astragalus is its ability to boost energy levels and vitality. Also, astragalus root has been linked to improving blood circulation. Astragalus is pretty well known as a 'safe' herb, with no known side effects. However, it is important to consult a physician before you take any kind of supplement, especially if you are already taking medications. Some medications can counteract with herbal remedies, and vice versa, so it's important to get your facts straight with a physician regarding your regimen. Also, if you are pregnant or nursing, it's not advisable to take astragalus as its effect on children have not been tested.
Now that you know more about astragalus root, you can better decide if it's for you or not.

Since you have probably heard many times before, that cranberry juice is effective for detox you are surely wondering how to detox using cranberry juice. You can rid the lymphatic system, the bowels and the kidneys of various kinds of harmful toxins with the help of the juice. Cranberries contain Arbutin, a diuretic that draws out toxins.
It will take around two to three weeks to complete your cranberry juice detox regime and you have to do it by drinking the juice daily. Along with the juice, you have to consume whole grain food items, brown rice, veggies, lentils, beans, fruits and nuts and hardly anything else. Once the body has gone through a complete detoxification after the second week, other kinds of food can be gradually reintroduced into your diet.
How to detox using cranberry juice?
You will require:
Astragalus capsules,
Dandelion leaf capsules,
Apple pectin,
Psyllium husk powder fiber,
Distilled water
Cranberry Juice (must be pure 100% juice with no added sugar).
Take four parts of distilled water and one part of cranberry juice . You have to add a tea spoon of apple pectin and a teaspoon of psyllium fiber to this mix. Now you have to stir together the whole mixture so that it turns into a homogenous drink and you can take this drink before breakfast or after waking up, on an empty stomach.
And as I mentioned just now, nuts, grains, fibrous food items etc are the only things that you can consume during this period. Then you have to prepare another second cup of the juice just in the method mentioned above and you have to drink this second cup of cranberry juice just 10 minutes before consuming your lunch or dinner. You should avoid of all kinds of processed food items, dairy products and meat. Instead eat fruits and veggies, preferably organic.
While you are on this detox, in the 1st week, you have to consume 2 capsules of dandelion leaves two or three times daily. It will clean out your bowels and your colon as it is a mild diuretic. During the second week replace the dandelion capsules with Astragalus capsules to cleanse the lymphatic system.
You have to follow these steps each and every day for 2 weeks. To get an extra burst of pectin, you can munch on organic apples day in and day out. Whatever toxins are in your body will be bound by the pectin and they will get flushed out easily. You can add bulk to the stool by drinking psyllium fiber and this will facilitate easy movement of bowel and bowel clearance.
During the third week you can gradually cut back on the psyllium husk powder and pectin and start to introduce a little free range meat and low fat organic dairy products. Your body will be detoxified. Now you know how to detox using cranberry juice.

Astragalus Tea - 4 Part Recipe
By Harry Bernstein

Astragalus Tea - A Simple Recipe
Astragalus Tea is the primary beverage mixture that is used in conventional Asian medication for energy. The tea is made from the root of the astragalus which is a beautiful plant that has long stems and purple flowers. The tea beverage is very beneficial for many health conditions. It may help in hepatitis, liver damage, immune problems, viral infections, influenza, hypertension, damaged tissue and other health conditions.
There are several ways that are recommended in the use of the drink. One way that is highly recommended is by using the infused method. First, put one tea bag into a mug, then add up to six ounces of boiling water. Let the tea steep for around three minutes. Squeeze or use a spoon to press the tea bag to improve the taste of the tea. Remove the bag from the cup. Many people will add honey to sweeten the flavor.
Here is another great astragalus tea recipe. You will need the following ingredients:
A ginger root - one inch piece is a perfect size
Four tablespoons of lemon juice
Four tablespoons of honey
Two to three slices of astragalus root
Start with enough boiling water to fill a quart size thermos. Grate the ginger and astragalus root and then add it to the thermos. Put the remaining ingredients into the thermos as well as the boiling water. Cover the thermos and let it sit for around 20 to 25 minutes. Strain the mixture into a cup and you will have a tasty and healthy tea. Put the lid on the thermos and put into the refrigerator for future use. When you get ready for another cup of tea, just heat it and use the same straining process. Hope you enjoy these flavorful astragalus tea recipes.

A Healthy Answer For Swine Flu Protection

There's been a lot of talk about the swine flu these last two weeks. The immediate danger to most parts of the country is very small. Even so, all these news reports have got people thinking about what they can do to protect themselves. I've already had several patients ask me what they can do to keep from getting sick.

A strong immune system plays an important role. I recommend three things to all my patients to help the immune system stay strong and healthy. Take Vitamin C, get enough sleep, and wash your hands regularly.

I've recently added a fourth suggestion to that list. If you really want to give your immune system the support it needs, then I recommend astragalus.

Chinese Herb Gives You Dramatic Results

In Chinese medicine, astragalus has been used for thousands of years in many, many different ways.

Ancient Chinese healers used astragalus to reduce the affects of stress on the body. Whether a patient suffered from physical, emotional, mental, or environmental stress, healers used astragalus to help the person cope better and to prevent detrimental effects that stress might have on health.

Astragalus was used to make the body better able to fight off diseases. People took the herb to protect against colds and infections as well as more serious conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, and cancer.

Healers also prescribed astragalus to help increase the vitality of their patients. Even healthy patients could benefit from the improvement in stamina and energy that astragalus delivered. The history of astragalus is very interesting, but it's the recent research on this herbal supplement that has me excited about recommending it to my patients.

Modern-Day Research Backs Up the Benefits of Astragalus

In the realm of modern medicine, the powerful health benefits of astragalus are just coming to light. It turns out there are good reasons why Chinese healers used astragalus for so many purposes. The herb is powerful and versatile when it comes to supporting your overall health. One of things I like best about it is that it works as both a preventative and as a treatment for many illnesses.

Astragalus has a number of valuable properties. It contains complex sugar molecules called polysaccharides that help strengthen the immune system. It has antibacterial properties that help to fight off infections and a number of diseases. It also works as an antioxidant and helps to protect your cells from damage. It has anti-mutagenic properties that make it a powerful ally in preventing cancer. And it helps reduce chronic, low-level inflammation that contributes to so many age-related diseases.

I just read a recent study in which scientists discovered that astragalus actually works to keep your cells younger. It stimulates the activity of telomerase, an enzyme that helps protect the DNA within your cells and that may slow aging at a cellular level. Younger cells mean less disease-especially cancer-and a slower overall aging process.

In animal studies, researchers have also verified the effects of astragalus on stamina and vitality. In mice induced with chronic fatigue syndrome, astragalus helped to restore balance to the production of inflammatory cytokines and it increased the mice's endurance.

For strengthening the immune system, astragalus works in a number of ways. It helps remove pathogens, it stimulates T-cell activity, and it activates a number of antiviral systems within your body. Through these means, astragalus supplements can protect you from everyday illnesses like the cold and flu. Other research shows that it can be an effective treatment for these illnesses, as well, helping you to recover faster.

The immune-boosting properties of astragalus are so powerful that it actually interferes with immune suppressing drugs. These drugs are most commonly given to transplant patients to reduce rejection. If you're on an immune suppressant for any reason, you shouldn't take astragalus. Otherwise, this powerful supplement can benefit you greatly.

The recommended dosage for astragalus is one to 25 grams a day. You can find astragalus at health food stores. It's commonly available as a standardized extract or in powdered capsules. For the best results, I prefer the extract. Your body will be better able to absorb it.

Whether you're worried about the swine flu or looking for a good way to promote your overall health and slow down the aging processes in your body, astragalus is a good option. Give it a try... I'm certain you'll be pleased with the results.

Sweet-Tasting Astragalus for Chemotherapy Patients

Astragalus is a very sweet-tasting herb found to be high in silicon, zinc, magnesium, and iron.

It's possible that the bitterness of a diagnosis of cancer can be relieved with the sweetness of this Chinese herb that has been used medicinally for thousands of years. One of the properties of Astragalus is that it enhances the body's natural defense mechanisms.

Scientists have discovered that the antioxidant, antiviral, and immune modulator activity of Astragalus are primary ways that the all natural herb helps alleviate the negative side effects of chemotherapy drugs. Immune modulators are substances that affect the immune system in some way to make it more active. By using immune modulators, a cancer patient on chemotherapy feels less toxic side effects and experiences a greater quality of life.

The big problem with chemotherapy is that it depresses the immune system, leaving cancer patients prone to infections that can become opportunistic. By using immune system modulators, such as the herb Astragalus, a cancer patient can become less prone to infections.

Herbalists consider Astragalus an herb great for not only the immune system, but also helpful as an adaptogen. An adaptogen helps the body adapt well to external circumstances, encouraging the system to function correctly.

The Research Studies Show Positive Benefits

One clinical study of 115 patients receiving various forms of chemotherapy found 83% higher white blood cell counts from the use of Astragalus, exactly what is needed to fight the battle of cancer. When white blood cell counts are higher, then it is possible to strongly ward off infections.

In another study, Astragalus was added to a petri dish containing white blood cells and tumor cells. The white blood cells began attacking the tumor cells. This is an important finding because tumor cells usually produce chemicals that turn off the white blood cells' ability to attack tumors. Astragalus clearly helps the white blood cells become faster and more efficient at fighting the tumor cells.

One study showed that lung cancer patients receiving chemotherapy, radiation and immunotherapy who were given Astragalus improved their overall response rate to all four treatments. In another study, patients with small cell lung cancer who took standard chemotherapy drugs like vincristine, carmustine and cyclophosphamide along with Astragalus and ginseng survived as long as 17 years from the combined therapy.

Astragalus was also found to stop the spread of cancers known to respond to the p53 gene, a tumor-suppressing gene that keeps defective cells from multiplying.

The fact that Astragalus is helpful, either with or without chemotherapy, makes this sweet-tasting herb an herb that should be considered in many cancer cases. If the toxic side effects of chemotherapy can be lessened by the addition of a simple herb, why not consider it?

Herbalists are finding though that the mixture of several herbs together, one of them Astragalus, can make even more impact than with Astragalus by itself! It's exciting research that will only benefit chemotherapy patients who wish to add an all natural approach to cancer treatment.

If you've experienced mild outbreaks of the herpes virus, the astragalus membranaceus root blended with certain vitamins and minerals can possibly provide dependable, natural relief. According to some studies, astragalus can potentially act as an effective herbal treatment against the herpes virus 1 and 2. Though more testing is needed, astragalus has been used for medicinal purposes in Chinese medicine, and is usually recommended for herpes prevention rather than to treat a crisis.

Astragalus is now becoming more popular in modern day Western medicine. Vitamins and supplements on the market today such as ImmunaSure, which was co-created by Dr. John Sherman, blend astragalus with lemon balm and de-odorized garlic to create a powerful support for the immune system.

What is Astragalus?

Astragalus belongs to the legume family called Fabaceae and sub-family called Faboideae. Native to the Northern Hemisphere regions, astragalus is often called milk-vetch, goat's-thorn, and locoweed. There are 2,000 species of herbs and shrubs in the Fabaceae family. The astragalus root comes from perennial plants that thrive in northern China as well as Mongolia. It has been used as a staple in Chinese medicine for centuries. Astragalus roots for medicine must be at least four years old and dried before they can be used as natural supplements.

Benefits of Astragalus

Astragalus root has several components that are believed to help strengthen the immune system. These are flavonoids, saponins, polysaccharides, astragalosides, and triterpenes. The root is believed to ward off infections and works by helping the skin to eliminate toxins from the body. Astragalus root can help reduce sweating and also acts as a mild diuretic. In America, studies have been conducted to show astragalus root can indeed help boost the immune system's T-cells, even for patients who are undergoing chemotherapy or radiation treatments for cancer.

Astragalus contains probiotics to help boost the body's good bacteria in the digestive tract. Another benefit is that astragalus root helps to protect the adrenal cortex, a hormone-producing gland that affects stress levels in the body. Saponins in the root can help prevent blood clots that may lead to stroke or a heart attack.

Uses for Astragalus

Astragalus root can be blended in a natural supplement or multivitamin and taken orally in capsule form. It can also be taken in powdered form as a tea or tincture. Astragalus in ointments can be used topically to help treat exterior wounds and other skin ailments.

Important Note: Always consult with a doctor before using astragalus or other vitamins and supplements - especially if you have an auto-immune condition, are a transplant recipient, are pregnant or breast-feeding, or if you are a hemophiliac. Astragalus may also react negatively to certain medications.

With strengthening of the immune system, the body will better be able to fight against herpes virus 1 and 2. Though there is no definite cure for herpes, the unwanted cold sores and other herpes symptoms can possibly be lessened with this remarkable root as a natural supplement!

Astragalus(Astragalus membranaceous)rating:

The astragalus species that is obtained from China is A. membranaceous, also known as Mongolian milk vetch, or by its Chinese name, huang qi. It is quite different from other species of Astragalus, known as locoweeds, which contain large amounts of selenium and other potential toxins, and from the Middle Eastern plant, A. gummifer, which is the source of gum tragacanth.

Uses and Benefits:

In Chinese traditional medicine, the root of A. membranaceous is a popular and potent tonic used for numerous specific indications, especially infections. It is thought to improve depressed immunity, and therefore it has been recommended for the treatment of AIDS and other viral diseases, and as an adjuvant in cancer therapy. The herb is now advocated for a wide variety of illnesses, including the common cold, influenza, respiratory insufficiency, diabetes, hypertension, liver disease, cardiac ischemia, heart failure, vascular insufficiency, and nephritis.

Pharmacology:

The important constituents include numerous triterpene saponins, known as astragalosides and related compounds such as soyasaponins. A number of polysaccharides, such as astragalans I-IV, have been isolated. Important flavonoids include quercetin and kaempferol; among its many other constituents are isoflavonoids, sugars, amino acids, and linoleic acid. It is unclear which of the numerous constituents are of therapeutic value. However, the polysaccharides and saponins have been suggested to be the major agents.

The polysaccharide fractions of the root extract have been reported to have in vitro effects that suggest an immune-enhancing capability. There is some evidence that astragalus can potentiate the effect of interferon against viruses and can increase IgA and IgM in nasal secretions in humans. Animal experiments have shown that extracts of astragalus can restore the immune properties of cancer patient T-cells in vitro. A more recent rat study does not confirm earlier reports that astragalus extract can prevent myelosuppression by cyclophosphamide.

Clinical Trials:

Almost all of the clinical studies on astragalus are in Chinese medical books or journals and are therefore not readily evaluated. In an open study on 1000 subjects, 8 it is alleged that a 2-month prophylactic course of the herb in a dosage of 8 g/day in combination with interferon was correlated with a significant reduction in colds compared to placebo or interferon alone. Benefits in humans for a wide variety of chronic and serious disorders also have been reported. For example, it is asserted that astragalus increases serum IgM, IgE, and cAMP; enhances left ventricular function and cardiac output in patients with angina pectoris; improves hemorrhagic indices in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus; increases survival in lung cancer when combined with conventional therapy; improves leukopenia; improves liver function in chronic viral hepatitis; and so on

However, none of these reports are evaluable, and the testing applied as well as the observations made by investigators do not conform to standard methods used in Western medicine. In general, these studies were uncontrolled or unblinded, and no reliable clinical studies in support of these indications have been reported in the English-language peer-reviewed literature. Thus, there is only very equivocal evidence to support the numerous clinical claims that are made for astragalus, particularly as an immune system restorative or as an immune modulator for use in the treatment of cancer.

Adverse Effects:

Herbalists regard astragalus as very safe based on its reputation as a valued traditional medication. It is unlikely that astragalus has any serious toxicity, although there is a lack of reliable clinical data.

Side Effects and Interactions:

There are no recognized drug interactions.

Cautions:

Astragalus can be obtained in combination mixtures, in which other agents may have a potential for toxicity.

Preparations & Doses:

Sliced astragalus root is often used to make teas, soups, or decoctions. The usual daily dose varies from 2 to 30 g or more of the dried root; although large doses appear to be safe, 8-15 g/day seems to be more reasonable. Some products contain standardized extracts, packaged in unit doses. Capsules containing 150-500 mg are commonly marketed, to be taken as often as 8 or 9 times a day; tinctures and fluid extracts are also available. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is usual to take astragalus in combination with other herbs.

Summary Evaluation

A membranaceous is a popular Chinese herb that has long been used as a tonic. Increasing claims suggest that it is of value as an immune restorative to fight viral diseases, as a treatment for Lancer, and as a cure for other disorders. However, the scientific evidence of clinical effectiveness is of unclear quality, and has not been validated outside the Asian literature. Thus, actual benefits are not substantiated. The fact that large doses can be taken with reported toxicity suggests that astragalus has minimal pharmacologic potency.

Astragalus is used for fatigue, circulation, infections, stress and more. Recent studies have suggested astragalus may reduce negative effects of radiation and chemotherapy treatments.

Astragalus membranaceus

COMMON NAMES
Astragalus, Huang qi, Milk vetch

LATIN NAME
Astragalus membranaceus

FAMILY
Leguminosae

PART USED
Root

DESCRIPTION
A perennial herb, astragalus grows up to a foot tall, with a tough, fibrous root and some branches. The bark is brownish yellow, irregular, and wrinkled or furrowed. The flowers are yellowish white. Its leaves are divided into 12 to 18 pairs of leaflets.

HABITAT
Astragalus is indigenous to northern China. It is also cultivated in other parts of Asia. This herb thrives in sandy, well-drained soil that receives ample sun.

FOLKLORE AND TRADITIONAL USES
The Chinese characters used to represent "huang qi" have many levels of meaning. The character huang means "yellow" which alludes to both its yellow interior and what the Chinese consider to be the color of life-giving earth. The character qi means "venerable" which alludes to its superior status in Chinese medicine. When pronounced with different inflections, qi also means "vital force," "to eat," and "addiction to sensual pleasures."

MEDICINAL USES
Astragalus has been used for more than 2,000 years in traditional Chinese medicine as a diuretic and as an immuno-stimulant. It is commonly employed to treat diabetes and nephritis. In the United States it is used to strengthen immune function after cancer chemotherapy. Studies have shown that huang qi encourages bone marrow to produce more phagocytes, cells that destroy bacteria and viruses. These actions are attributed to huang qi's active constituents - glycans, which stimulate the action of phagocytes; polysaccharides, which enhance immune function; and saponins, which stimulate the growth of lymphocytes. Some believe that huang qi has the potential to treat HIV infection; further study is needed.
